Kampala's air is severely polluted mostly due to road transport that's dominated by ageing, poorly maintained vehicles, weak regulatory enforcement, and the absence of emissions data for action - harming children, communities, & the environment. This project raises community awareness, generates emissions data, trains mechanics in sustainable maintenance, advances clean-mobility innovation, & strengthens policy advocacy to reduce transport pollution & protect public health and the environment.
Air pollution is a leading preventable cause of death worldwide, with infants in developing countries most affected. WHO reports that over 90% of children breathe unsafe air daily, and in Uganda, 60 per 1,000 live births are lost. In Kampala, road transport is a major driver of pollution due to heavy fossil-fuel use and poor vehicle maintenance. Our project is set to cut transport-induced pollution in Uganda and beyond.
We help communities understand how transport causes air pollution and how it harms their health and environment. We train informal mechanics, motorists, and related businesses to maintain vehicles better, cut emissions, and adopt cleaner practices. We also collect emissions data for policy influence & promote e-mobility adoption through retrofitting. Protecting children from polluted air is a key goal, and we show how cleaner transport supports a safer climate for everyone.
Over 3 million Ugandans, especially infants in Kampala, will benefit from cleaner air and healthier lives. As awareness grows, public support for environmental protection and climate action will strengthen. With sustained engagement of policymakers and partners, government response to the informal transport sector will improve, leading to better air quality, safer mobility, and more sustainable transport systems across Africa.
