Period poverty in Uganda undermines rural girls' education and potential. The RED Campaign tackles this with our "Minds, Toilets, Pads" approach in Mpigi and Butambala Districts: 1. Breaking taboos with menstrual health education by training 50 peer educators. 2. Upgrading 20 high-school sanitation for safe, dignified spaces. 3. Providing reusable pads to ensure 1000 girls never miss school. Help us break the cycle of period poverty and empower Ugandan girls.
Our needs assessment in Mpigi and Butambala revealed that a staggering 70% lack access to sanitary products, resorting to harmful alternatives. School facilities are often inadequate, and restrictive taboos prevent open discussion about menstruation. This leads to girls missing an average of 4-5 school days each month, undermining their education and health and increases the risk of infections. These barriers create a cycle of shame and disadvantage, limiting girls' potential and wellbeing.
The RED Campaign combats period poverty in Mpigi and Butambala with an integrated approach. We'll educate girls and communities about menstrual health, dispelling harmful taboos. We'll upgrade school toilets, creating safe and dignified spaces. Our Omuto Essentials program will provide reusable pads, ensuring a sustainable solution. This approach empowers girls with knowledge, resources, and support, enabling them to stay in school, manage periods with confidence, and break the cycle
The RED Campaign's impact on girls in Mpigi and Butambala is transformative. Improved menstrual hygiene means boosted school attendance, better health, and greater confidence. Girls become empowered to break taboos and advocate for themselves. The program also fosters income-generating skills, leading to economic independence. These individual successes create a ripple effect: gender-equitable communities, reduced healthcare burdens, and overall stronger, more resilient societies.
