Female Genital Mutilation/Cut is the worst form of gender based violence against women/girls. No alternative tailor made rite of passage has being found to fill the gap of FGM/C. We have come up with Red Ribbon Campaign as a rite of passage where girls Cut the piece of red ribbon. It has worked wonders and we have saved 10,000 in Tharaka villages now we want to save 100,000 in the next 5 years among Somali women FGM/C is 98% among Kisii Women at 96.1%, and the Maasai women at 73.2% .
Our project is needed because FGM/C remains a problem in Kenya. The most recent Kenya Demographic Health Survey (KDHS), shows that FGM/C among women aged 5-49 is 21%, and it is 98% among Somali women, 96.1%among Kisii Women, and 73.2% among the Masai women. We want to scale up our tried and proven successful tested Red Ribbon Campaign approach to those groups of women most at risk of FGM/C i.e. the Somali, Kisii and Masai women/girls .
Our organisation will solve this problem by offering the communities an alternative tailor made rite of passage and strengthening Sexual and reproductive health and rights movement at grassrrots level and building the capacity of our staff and improve our organization infrastructure to position us in the fore front of advocating for the right of women and girls from one of the worst form of violence against women FGM/C.
This project will offer a permanent solution to the communities in ending FGM/C in this generation once and once for all. Communities continue propagating FGM/C from one generation to the other because they are not offered or they have not come up with an alternative rite of passage that is tailor made to them to fill the FGM vacuum. Out Red Ribbon campaign is offering the long term solution. It will stop people returning to FGM.
