Project Report | May 4, 2020
Land for Waste Centre for Padang Village

By Theresa Ng | Programme Development Manager

We have rented a piece of land (30ftx20ft) to build a waste segregation centre for Kampung Padang (Padang Village). There will also be an open food waste area for cows to feed in. Now, we need additional funding to complete the construction.
We have started regular household collection for the first cluster of homes since 24th April 2020 but some households are still adjusting to the system. We still notice food waste mixed with plastic sachet, or people still throwing trash to the sea. But we will continue to monitor and remind them. Hopefully, we will see a full compliance by the end of this month.
The first cluster of 30 homes were given different materials for segregation such as:

  1. Colander and small basin for food waste
  2. Mesh bag made from discarded net for can and glass
  3. Plastic bags for general plastic trash
  4. All types of plastic bottles should be in our designated recycling bins around the village

Total waste collection in Week 1:

Food waste: 286 kg
Can/Glass: 13.2 kg
Other trash: 20.8 kg
