Heavy rains and flooding have continued to compound an already fragile humanitarian situation in the southern and central parts of Somalia, worsening conditions for communities who recently endured a long period of drought (OCHA 25/05/2018). The floods have resulted in the destruction of homes, critical infrastructure, latrines, and the loss of livestock and crops. There is need for shelter and Non Food Items (NFIs), as well as WASH assistance.
More than 220,000 people are affected and displaced by flood. The displaced households are currently staying in temporary shelter in roadside camps, public buildings and host families. People living in temporary shelters, women, children and people with chronic and severe illnesses, are vulnerable as they are more exposed to unsafe conditions (e.g. poor toilets and safe drinking water, protection issues). The proposed project will address the problems of safe drinking water, sanitation, material support for children education and housing for resettlement of affected 250 families in Beledweyne town in central Somalia. They will be oriented on preparedness, sanitation and hygiene. They will also be sensitized about the safe houses.
The project will build the capacity of community to cope with natural disasters including flood. It improves their livelihoods and health. Organized networks will be forming a structure, network and set of procedures that is ready to tackle the humanitarian crisis that could unveil in the coming months and years. When possible, economic support that helps families generate income for themselves and escape poverty will be prioritized. Some basic items will be gathered through support networks.
