Flash floods and landslides in Aceh and Sumatra have had a significant impact on the safety, well-being, and future of children. Through the "Recover and Protect Indonesian Children" program, YAFSI supports integrated post-disaster recovery by providing Child-Friendly Spaces, Mental Health and Psychosocial Support, and safer temporary shelters. This project helps children recover, feel safe, and regain hope, while empowering families and communities to protect them during the recovery process.
Flash floods and landslides in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra have forced 238,000 people to flee to crowded and unsafe shelters. Children are the most affected group. The loss of homes and schools has increased risks to children's safety and well-being, including psychosocial distress, developmental delays, family separation, and exposure to violence. Limited access to safe spaces and structured support threatens their immediate protection and long-term recovery.
Recover and Protect Indonesian Children places children at the center of post-disaster recovery by providing Child-Friendly Spaces, psychosocial support, and Psychological First Aid to help children heal and regain a sense of safety. At the same time, the project strengthens protection by equipping caregivers and communities with child protection skills and improving safety in temporary shelters, creating more dignified and child-responsive environments throughout the recovery process.
In the long term, this project builds more resilient children and communities by helping children heal from stress and return to healthy development, while strengthening families' and communities' capacity to protect children in future emergencies. By embedding child protection and psychosocial support into disaster recovery, Recover and Protect Indonesian Children ensures safer, more inclusive, and child-centered responses beyond the life of the project.
