Dear Supporters, we would like to provide you with an overview of the progress of the reconstruction project. The reconstruction of the animal shelter "SECOND HOME" started in August 2017 and is still ongoing. The project is being implemented in Vezi-1, Demene parish, Daugavpils region, LV-5442, Latvia.
Project purpose:
• To rebuild the previously used main shelter building with the view to improving welfare standards for animals within the Animal Shelter "SECOND HOME";
Building description:
1.1 Reception for visitors;
1.2 Kitchen - for cooking and storing food for animals;
1.3 Veterinary Cabinet - for intake of animals, for veterinary assistance, there will also be neutering projects carried out (neutering of animals whose owners are on social welfare, neutering of feral cat colonies);
1.4 Recovery room for keeping animals post operation;
1.5 Isolation room - a room where sick animals will be kept;
1.6 Cats’ room - our shelter’s cats will live there;
1.7 Boiler room;
1.8 Changing room for our staff who are taking care of our animals;
1.9 Grooming room for animals;
1.10 Storage room for washing machine and laundry;

1.12 Ramp for people with special needs. This will make our shelter more accessible for absolutely everyone who are interested in helping our animals.
2.1 Kitchen for staff members and volunteers - for lunch breaks and volunteers who come to us for the full day;
2.2 Room for seminars / education – here we are going to organize informal education and seminars for children a and other organizations. These workshops will mostly be aimed at discussing topics related to animal welfare and responsible ownership;
2.3 Accommodation for colleagues and volunteers from international and national organizations - this strategy is very popular abroad, when people from other welfare organizations travel to each other and exchange experiences working for short periods in colleagues' organizations;
2.4 One office;
2.5 Room with 2 kennels - these kennels are for those dogs that can not live in outdoor kennels (eg. very small puppies; dogs requiring rehabilitation or dogs who have lived in a home environment before entering our shelter);
The result of the project will be a complete rebuild from an old, farmhouse type, wooden building to a modern multifunctional animal shelter, complying with all sanitary and aesthetic requirements.
The total amount for the project is €177,108.30. As a result of active, energetic and professional activities of the Society ‘The Pet’s Second Home’, significant financing was secured for the reconstruction of the building:
However, for the co-financing project and completion of all the work, we still require €12,408.30 in funding/donations and we would be grateful for your support and help!
