Peace Winds has provided support and assistance to thousands of families since the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes. From initial relief assistance to long-term recovery, Peace Winds has been aiding families every step of the way. The families and we are incredibly grateful for your kindness and commitment to the victims and survivors.
Peace Winds will be supporting the families and the animal shelter through the upcoming holidays wrapping up our support in March 2019. Peace Winds is handing over support to the very capable township leaders from the 24 townships in Mashiki as well as several small local NGOs. Peace Winds established the township leadership program to strengthen engagement and community connection among the 1,500 remaining families in temporary housing. The Central and Prefectural Governments are providing some assistance, e.g., reduced utilities costs, housing supplements.
With your support, Peace Winds delivered immediate relief following the earthquakes. We provided search and rescue, shelter, water, food, medicines, and hygiene kits. We responded to the needs of elderly and those most vulnerable. We cared for the survivors' pets by funding animal shelters and veterinary help. We moved families from shelters to temporary housing, distributed home appliances, heating carpets, TVs, dehumidifiers, and vacuums.
With your support, Peace Winds ameliorated loneliness at the temporary housing complexes through "community building" activities, e.g., arts and crafts programs, tea and karaoke, cooking classes, outdoor festivals, and field trips. Many activities focused on the holidays. We also provided counseling through the local university and through local NGOs.
Today as we draw down our assistance, we wish to thank you for helping the people of Kumamoto who suffered from the earthquakes. We thank you for aiding individual and community resilience, providing relief and recovery.
Peace Winds will continue to aid disaster victims and survivors through our newest project, Japan Disaster: Relief and Recovery. This project will support Kumamoto families and aid Peace Winds to respond to future disasters. Specifically, funds will assist Kumamoto families during the 2018 holiday season and into March 2019.
On behalf of the people of Japan, we humbly thank you.
