Summary

In September 2018 Hurricane Florence struck New Bern, North Carolina, with that deadly confluence of hurricane storm surge and rainwater flooding. The result was literally thousands of homes flooded and made unlivable. Most of these homeowners were without flood insurance. And many are low-income and lack the wherewithal to rebuild themselves. Fuller Center Disaster ReBuilders is committed to restoring the homes of those with no other alternative. We do this with volunteer labor and donations.

Challenge

Hundreds of homeowners in New Bern, NC, are living in unsafe condition in mucked out homes. These homes have exposed wiring and plumbing and no insulation. These gutted out homes are particularly hazardous for the elderly with an abundance of trip and fall hazards.

Solution

Donations to this project purchase the construction materials for volunteers to rebuild these homes.

Long-Term Impact

Not only is a deserving family restored to their home, but a community begins its restoration. And low income housing stock is preserved and not lost to the rental market.
