"We had no courage and hope to start up life again as we had lost everything that we had earned so far. During this time (June 2015), I found out I was having a baby. I think this baby was the strength for our family to stand together and live again with hope." ~ Salina
Sanila is an 18 year old that is now the mother of a healthy daughter. Her family lost their house and everything they owned during the earthquakes last spring, and they are still living in a temporary shelter in the remote village of Bhimtar. The earthquakes had also destroyed the Bhimtar health facility so when Salina went into labor in February, she was taken to a birthing tent that One Heart World-Wide had temporarily set up to continue providing birthing services. In hindsight, Salina mentioned that she had been hesitent about delivering inside a tent because she was concerned with both the safety and the amoun of privacy she would have. Her concern for privacy was addressed when she entered through a door that could be opened and closed, and she was very surprised to see inside - a small but well maintained room with various equipement and a standard delivery bed. She was attended by a nurse and had a healthy baby girl within just an hour of going into labor!
Salina's baby girl is one of over 1,329 deliveries that have taken place in OHW birthing tents so far this year. This year, we have also trained a total of 932 Community Outreach Providers, 1,996 Local Stakeholders, and 105 Skilled Birth Attendants in our earthquake districts of Dhading and Sindhupalchok. We have also fully upgraded 7 birthing centers and partially upgraded 75 birthing centers in these two districts! Through these trainings and upgrades, our aim is to help the Nepali government re-establish an improved system of maternal and neonatal healthcare, one that is stronger and better than the one that existed before the earthquakes.
Thanks to wonderful donors and supporters like yourself, One Heart World-Wide has been able to continue to provide regular healthcare services regardless of the damages caused by the earthquakes. We are working to slowly re-establish a healthcare infrastructure that is stronger, more accesible, and improved all around.
"We did 12 deliveries after the tent was installed. The tent, delivery bed and other BC related equipement provided by OHW made it easy to conduct the deliveries. Most delivery cases came at night. The solar light helped to do the deliveries safely. All the patients and service receivers talked good about the tent, the solar light and the equipment."
