Successful Internship Program for Convicted Youth

By Siphiwe Vilakati | Executive Director

On January 28, 2026, five of the targeted youth that were enrolled at Ngihlomise Youth Skills Academy for vocational and life skills training completed an internship program that was aimed at equipping them with on the job training for increased access to employment or entrepreneurship opportunities. The internship program  included the following courses:

  • Plumbing
  • Welding
  • Domestic Electrical Installation

In addition, agriculture and financial literacy modules were incorporated to provide alternative livelihood options through small-scale enterprises or subsistence farming for those unable to secure formal employment. In order to enhance their agriculture skills, the students will also trained in strawberry production and will be linked to local retail markets to sell their produce. This holistic approach aims to reduce recidivism by equipping youth offenders with practical, lawful income-generating skills. They will also be mentored on establishing businesses on the trades they were trained in and supported to register their businesses in order to access micro finance that is targeting the youth in Eswatini

Funding Needs

Despite notable progress, additional funding is required to achieve the project’s objectives fully. The following needs have been identified:

  1. Enrollment of new of the remaining 65 youth offenders into vocational training and agriculture programs.
  2. Procurement of start-up toolkits and farming equipment to enable graduates to launch small trades or agriculture-based projects.
  3. Financial support for the registration of companies

Conclusion

Empowering disadvantaged youth offenders through vocational training, life skills education, and entrepreneurship support directly addresses barriers to formal employment. The project offers these young people a pathway to rehabilitation and economic independence, promoting social reintegration and reducing the likelihood of reoffending. Ultimately, the initiative contributes to community development, strengthens rehabilitation efforts, and supports Eswatini’s broader goals of inclusive and sustainable youth empowerment.
