Armed conflict in South Kivu has left families in Miti, Birava, Bukavu, Laziba, Katogota, Idjwi, Bunyakiri, and Kavumu facing an uncertain future. Homes have been destroyed, farmland abandoned, and household incomes lost. For many displaced families, daily life now means living without adequate shelter, struggling to find enough food, and having little opportunity to earn an income. Children are particularly affected, as prolonged hunger and displacement make it harder for them to remain in school and for families to regain a sense of security.
Our Rebuild Lives in Congo’s War Zones project has a total funding goal of US$250,000. To date, we have not yet received funding toward this target, but we remain committed to reaching the families who urgently need assistance. The project is currently in the preparation and resource-mobilization phase, including the identification of trainers and potential learners who will participate in the recovery activities. Once resources are secured, the project will support the reconstruction of 80 safe homes, provide 3,000 food packages and 120 clothing kits, and distribute 9,000 kg of high-yield seeds to help families restore agricultural production. In addition, 40 solidarity groups will receive US$500 each to restart small income-generating activities and rebuild household livelihoods.
The impact we hope to achieve goes beyond immediate relief. A safe home can give a displaced family dignity and stability; food assistance can protect children from hunger; seeds can help families move from dependence on aid toward producing their own food; and livelihood support can give parents the means to provide for their children again. We are deeply grateful to GlobalGiving for the collaboration and opportunity to connect this initiative with a wider community of international supporters.
