In July 2024, CHoiCe started the Reading Aunties project, aimed at promoting literacy and education in rural Limpopo Province. Over the last quarter, the 6 trained Reading Aunties continued to conduct reading sessions at the identified school outside Tzaneen, Mopani District.
With a focus on Foundation Phase learners (in Grade R to Grade 2), the Reading Aunties were able to reach 116 learners. They read and engaged on stories about animals (from books titled Zebra Stripe and Arlo the Lion Who Couldn't Sleep), and learned more about what adventures dinosaurs get up to (from a book titled Worrysaurus).
The children continued to take part in the sessions enthusiastically and interacted with the Reading Aunties. CHoiCe was invited to attend the annual school prize-giving ceremony, and book prizes were presented to the child who had participated the most in each class.
The teachers and school staff expressed their appreciation for the support, sharing that they have experienced how much the children enjoy the sessions and how positively this impacts their learning.
The Reading Aunties each received Certificates of Appreciation in recognition of their hardwork and dedication to developing children over the year.
We look forward to continuing to share the impact of the Reading Aunties as we fundraise for their continued activities in the future.
