Report – Ray of Hope
Date: 4 December 2025
Title: Improving the lives of children one classroom lesson at a time
Introduction
Network for Human and Social Development (NHSD) is a non-government, non-profit charity registered with Islamabad Charity Commission, Pakistan Software Export Board, Pakistan Center of Philanthropy and Economic Affairs Division Government of Pakistan. Further, NHSD is an implementation partner for GlobalGiving, Myriad USA, Benevity and is also registered on GlobalHands, and is also an implementation partner for more than 60 international and national partners.
Our thematic areas are water and sanitation, education, health, disaster risk management, rehabilitation and relief, as well as poverty alleviation, youth and women empowerment, and sustainable livelihood. We have been working in these fields since 2012.
Background:
Ray of Hope is an initiative originating from the need to resolve the issue of sustainable education for children in Maskeenabad and Dhoke Chowdrian Rawalpindi as well as in Dadu Sindh. These children belong to families who are illiterate and unskilled, and are dependent on daily wages to sustainably maintain their houses. Their parents are security guards, domestic staff, daily wage labourers, drivers; in most cases, the families are single breadwinner families and have limited funds leftover to provide education for their children, often being the case that the children become out-of-school children, being dropped out before they could complete matriculation. Matriculation is a foundational requirement for anything in Pakistan – you are prevented entry into gaining a meaningful skill certification, or even gaining a feasible job in the government sector which provides a stable source of income.
Report:
Ray of Hope is a project for which NHSD has been undertaking since November 2024. Since that time, our endeavors have resulted in education for more than 700 students in Punjab and Sindh. These activities have also resulted in 15 job placements in the education sector, more specifically in the non-formal basic education sector which plays a key role towards education as well as sustainable livelihood.
Our endeavors have been recognized by the government as they have registered our schools in their system as non-formal basic education centers and furthermore that the teachers are provided teaching aids, curricula to follow, as well as providing funds so that they can support their families as well as the work that is being done in their areas, as they provide education to children who are brought to the schools themselves.
NHSD made an innovation by inculcating playtime, providing a safe zone where children can express themselves whilst also having an opportunity to be children themselves, something which they are not allowed to have as without this project, these children also become earning hands for their families – a major contributor as to why they become out-of-school children. This project ensures that they are also cared for whilst their parents are working.
So far 700 children as well as 20 teachers have benefited from education and livelihood respectively. This endeavor is substantially focused to ensuring that the children have a matriculation certification which ensures their sustainable opportunities for skill attainment.
To that end we are grateful for our donors and our patrons whom have provided consistent support to us.
We are sharing photos of the work that we have completed in the attached PDF document.
