The Rally to Read provides the opportunity for individual and company sponsors to collaboratively fund a unique project aimed at enhancing the education provided within clusters of remote and generally neglected primary schools in remote rural areas of South Africa. The project aims to empower the teachers of these clusters - in multiple provinces - via training workshops, mentorship and the delivery of carefully selected books / materials to enable sound teaching methodologies to be implemented
A big problem facing rural teachers are their isolation from the larger community. Rural educators are not exposed to inputs from the external sources that urban educators take for granted. Through the Rally the educators receive training which up-skills them to be on the same level as their urban counterparts. But it is the children in the rally project who benefit the most. Through the project the children are given the opportunity to realize their potential and to become life-long learners.
The Rally programme will have direct results on teacher development and learner achievement. The programme broadly covered the following aspects of Language and Literacy: Curriculum coverage; Learner progression; Teacher progression; Resource supply.
Project schools that often begin with bare classroom walls and dispirited teachers respond well to the intervention. Colourful classrooms conducive to learning, teaching methodologies that are user-friendly, child-centred and produce results, combined with relevant resources that are meaningful to the learner are the key factors that build up over time and contribute towards a model of best practice
