Summary

In 2019, there were an estimated 272 million international migrants. Many were displaced by conflict, poverty, natural disasters and climate change. Humanitarian responses to migration crises are largely underfunded. Private-public partnerships are critical for strengthening UN operations and ensuring no one is left behind. USA for IOM brings visibility to IOM's work and provides credible information about the challenges facing migrants. In doing so, we catalyze collaboration across sectors.

Challenge

As part of its UN Mandate, IOM responds to global displacement crises by providing food, clean water, shelter, medical services, education and security. COVID-19 introduced new hurdles in addressing these crises; it strained state services, limited humanitarian operations, and heightened xenophobia. There is an urgent need for partners across sectors to come together and support migrants and refugees. Raising awareness is the first step to forging these crucial cross-sector interventions.

Solution

USAforIOM creates spaces for dialogue and promotes fact-based information about migration for media outlets, academia, the private sector, and the general public. We highlight the positive contributions and critical needs of migrants through webinars, podcasts, social media campaigns, press releases, short films. Current priorities include the Venezuelan Displacement Crises, root causes of migration in the Northern Triangle, assistance for Rohingya, Disaster Resilience for Small Island States.

Long-Term Impact

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused an unprecedented global mobility crisis. Without freedom of movement, the global community faces widespread human rights challenges. Raising awareness of IOM's life-saving work strengthens public understanding of the needs of migrants, combatting prejudices and advancing community cohesion. Resources mobilized as a result of these efforts are indispensable to IOM's ability to implement development initiatives and respond to crises with agility.
