This project aims to help contain the spread of Ebola and reduce violent resistance and mistrust within the community towards the Ebola response in Goma, North Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo. It also aims to build trust between communities and non medical state actors; interventions such as community dialogues and participatory theatre are designed to bring together key stakeholders , including men, women and youth.
Ebola remains a recuring threat in the DRC,and North kivu, including Goma,is a high-risk are due to several factors.Since 1976, the DRC has experienced 16 Ebola outbreaks. The 16th outbreak in 2025 in Kasai demonstrates that the virus is still circulating. Goma is exposed due to population movements with Rwanda,Uganda and rural areas where cases can emerge.Low adoption of community-level prevention measures despite past campaigns.Low use of hand washing stations and protective equipment in markets
The solution is based on four key areas: Four concrete steps to overcome the obstacles identified in Goma: Production of simple visual materials in french and swahili:Posters, children's comics, 30 second radio spots;Utilising trusted channels: Community radio stations in Goma, neighborhood leaders, churches, mosques and youth leaders. Installing 100 handwashing stations in markets, schools, and health centers in at-risk neighborhoods;Distributing basic IPC kits.
This project aims for lasting behavioral change and ingrained hygiene habits:Handwashing with soap and the use of handwashing stations in markets and schools become a social norm, even after the project;Fewer traditionnal burials involving direct contact , less consption of uncooked bushmeat, and more early recourse to health centers. Local capacity bulding: 40 trained community health workers and 50 community liaisons remain in the community. They become a resource for Ebola prevention.
