The ability to travel to school is important for every girl. There is no school bus or bus pass available to students traveling to and from school on a daily basis. Each family has to find their very own means to get their children to school. Children forced to travel far distances must find hundreds of dollars daily for bus and taxi fares. In situations where parents and guardians are unemployed, or are struggling to make ends meet, a high incidence of absenteeism results. Sadly, there are the anecdotal reports of teenaged girls, needing to get to school, currying favour with unscrupulous taxi drivers and conductors.
Tammy has had spotty attendance her entire high school career. The trip to her district in rural St. Ann requires three taxis. Even though she is a bright student, her inability to attend classes on a regular basis has made it difficult for her to excel in her studies. Thanks to our Raise the Girlz in Jamaica Campaign we are able to help Tammy travel to school regularly. Although very shy about her need, Tammy will pull our director to the side to gently remind her that she will be needing help for the coming week. Now she makes it to school daily and even has an opportunity to play a more active role in the after-school programs at the GWG Leadership Center. Even though, chores are reassigned weekly, Tammy has become the chief snack maker. She loves preparing snacks for all the girls to enjoy after-school.
