This project will build rainwater harvesting systems for 3 vulnerable rural communities in the Azuero Peninsula in Panama which are currently affected by climate change induced droughts. This projects also provides the community schools with an orchard where the children will learn how to produce their own food organically.
In the Azuero Peninsula in Panama, the drought period has extended as a result of climate change. Unsustainable livestock farming practices, use of pesticides, burning on farms, and deforestation in stream and river basins have worsened soil degradation and contaminated water tributaries, decreasing the resilience of the community residents. Drinking water, access to wells, or reserve tanks in these communities is very limited and the few that exist are privately owned.
Building rainwater harvesting system for three rural communities in the Azuero Peninsula will provide a solution to the water shortages that these communities are having to endure every day in the dry season in Panama. Having stored water will allow the schools to continue their class schedule regularly and provide water for the school orchards, where children can learn how to produce their own food organically.
Pro Eco Azuero works holistically to support all aspects of our ecological community- the people, the forests, and the animals. We are finding innovative ways to bring balance and a sense of unity so that we may work towards a more resilient future. The project aims to create more environmental awareness among community residents regarding the environmental issues in the area, and also to replicate in other communities so that residents can adapt to climate change and build resilience.
