World Rainforest Day, observed each year on June 22, highlights the global urgency of protecting the world’s remaining tropical rainforests—ecosystems essential for climate stability, biodiversity, and human wellbeing. For Sri Lanka, this day underscores the importance of safeguarding the island’s last lowland rainforests, which contain extraordinary levels of endemic species and face ongoing threats from deforestation and habitat fragmentation.
Over the past several years, Rainforest Protectors Trust steadily expanded its network of permanently protected rainforest lands bordering the Sinharaja Forest Reserve through acquisition of threatened private forest lands on sale thus strengthening wildlife corridors and preserving critical habitat. This longterm effort reached an important milestone last year with the establishment of the Rainforest Conservation and Education Center, a dedicated hub for community learning, research, and reforestation initiatives. Together, these achievements reflect the Trust’s commitment to both land protection and public engagement.
As we mark World Rainforest Day, Rainforest Protectors Trust calls on individuals, communities, and partners to take meaningful action—whether by donating towards land conservation, participating in reforestation, or spreading awareness about the importance of Sri Lanka’s rainforests. Every contribution strengthens the collective effort to protect these irreplaceable ecosystems and ensures they continue to thrive for generations to come.
