In the June of 2013, the northern states of Uttarakhand & Himachal Pradesh were hit with the worst floods in recent memory. The loss of life and property is unprecedented. Owing to the treacherous terrain, rescue and relief operations are intermittent. People are faced with the dearth of basic necessities such as water, food, shelter, clothing, medicines etc. This project will work for the relief and rehabilitation of the flood victims.
Multiple cloudbursts & torrential downpour on June 16th & 17th had swollen River Ganga & River Yamuna causing death & destruction along their banks in Himalayan region. As these regions are popular summer destinations, loss of life is acute at 550 & thousands still remain missing. Flash floods have wiped away villages, roads & mountains making survival tough challenge. Immediate need is for woollens, blankets, tarpaulins, mosquito nets, dry ration, utensils, buckets, torches & basic medicines.
Project "Rahat Floods"(Rahat literally means relief) will work for welfare of flood victims. GOONJ will put to work its decade-long experience of disaster relief. We have partnered with grassroots agencies that give us accurate assessment of damage & needs of people. Also they become crucial last leg in distribution chain as they sensitively deal with issue of giving with dignity. Focus shall be on communities in remote areas & on people living in abject poverty.
For GOONJ, sending relief material is only the first step. After we distribute the immediate supplies, we will work for their long-term empowerment and rehabilitation. These people have lost everything in the floods from their clothes and utensils to their means of livelihood. They need more than just relief camps to resurrect their lives. Goonj helps them get back on their feet.
