We enable disadvantaged children in Sierra Leone and Liberia to access quality education. In Sierra Leone, we support the only functioning primary school on the remote Turtle Islands, and provide scholarships to children from low income families to attend high quality schools in Freetown. In Liberia, we fund the LIFE for Liberia literacy center serving out-of-school children in Paynesville, outside Monrovia.
During the Ebola crisis, 3m children were kept out of school in Sierra Leone and Liberia. Kids are now back in school, but the challenge of getting a good education remains as acute as ever. A recent study found that more than 90% of girls finishing primary school in Sierra Leone and Liberia had graduated still unable to read or do basic math.
We support quality education in Sierra Leone and Liberia in several ways. In Sierra Leone, we support the only functioning primary school on the remote Turtle Islands, and provide scholarships that enable students from low income families to attend high quality schools in Freetown and the Western Area. In Liberia, we fund the LIFE for Liberia literacy center serving out-of-school children in Paynesville, outside Monrovia.
Our operations currently support more than 400 students to obtain a quality of education that would otherwise be out of reach, enabling them to progress in further study and the jobs market.
