Joel's Place is working with American Ramp Company to add a pump track to our park here at 1890 Marika Road! This will be a smooth surface for biking, scooters and skateboards providing hours of outdoor fun for the youth who come the Friday night Skate Church and Raw Joy School Age program.
In Fairbanks, Alaska youth 10-24 are profoundly impacted by trauma and suicide where accidental death and suicide are the first and second leading cause of death. In the Fairbanks North Star Borough suicide peaks in April and July and mirrors the ethnicity of our population which is 71% white, 7.7% Latino, 6.9% Native Alaskan, 5% black and 9.1% all other. It is expected that our population will grow from 99,357 in 2014 to 106,822 in 2017. 30% of the FNSB population are ages 5-24.
The pump track project will address the problems facing Fairbanks North Star Borough youth by providing an activity that brings them to a supervised recreation area, with certified instructors and youth enrichment activities that keep bored children out of trouble and engaged in healthy activities. Suicide is prevented when young people develop a sense of being connected having positive friends, mentors and adult advisers.
Young people will belong to a community of friends and trusted adults while participating in sports that they love. Fairbanks, Alaska will no longer have a suicide rate twice the national rate. Young people will increase help seeking behaviors when experiencing loss or trauma in their lives. The impact will be felt in our community of 100,000 people!
