Preparing Our Youth for a Safer Digital Future

By Azania Silva Gonzalez | Director of Social Inversement

Hello dear friend.

Technology is transforming the way we learn, communicate, work, and envision the future. As artificial intelligence and digital tools become increasingly present in our daily lives, preparing young people to navigate this rapidly evolving world safely and responsibly has become an essential part of their education.

Recently, 30 students in grades 11 and 12 from PECES Alternative School participated in an intensive cybersecurity training program designed to provide them with practical knowledge to recognize digital risks and better protect themselves and their personal information online.

The 40-hour training took place over eight days, from August 31 through September 11, and was led by Raíces Cyber. The initiative was funded by the Puerto Rico Department of Economic Development and Commerce.

Before the program began, an introductory orientation was offered to the students, allowing interested students to learn about the opportunity and apply. The response was remarkable: as many as 40 students initially expressed interest, demonstrating how relevant technology and cybersecurity have become to this generation. Ultimately, 30 students remained because there was and completed the training experience.

Throughout the workshops, students explored essential topics such as creating secure passwords, protecting their privacy online, identifying phishing attempts, recognizing potential digital threats, and using social media responsibly. More importantly, they were encouraged to think critically about the situations they may encounter online and how their decisions can help protect not only their information, but also their future.

The results reflected meaningful learning. Pre- and post-training assessments showed an overall positive improvement, with a cumulative 230% positive difference reported across the evaluations. Even more encouraging, 95% of participants expressed an interest in continuing their training in cybersecurity and recognized the importance these skills may have for their academic and professional futures.

This interest represents an opportunity that extends far beyond a single workshop.

Cybersecurity education can help young people become more responsible digital citizens while introducing them to skills increasingly relevant in higher education and the workforce. In a world shaped by technology, data, and artificial intelligence, understanding how to navigate digital environments safely can empower students to become informed users—and perhaps inspire some of them to become the cybersecurity professionals, technology leaders, and innovators of tomorrow.

At PECES, experiences like this reinforce our commitment to providing young people with opportunities that respond to the world they are inheriting. While this particular initiative was made possible through public funding, every new experience strengthens our capacity to identify what engages our students, what skills they need, and where new opportunities can be created.

This is why the support of our GlobalGiving community remains so important. Your contributions help PECES continue expanding opportunities, creating meaningful learning experiences, and investing in the potential of young people who will shape the future of their communities and Puerto Rico.

Preparing our youth for tomorrow means giving them the tools to understand the world that is already emerging today.

Thank you for believing in their potential and for helping us build a safer, stronger and more hopeful future, one young persona at a time.
