Hurricanes, a pandemic, earthquakes and recent floodings have impacted and challenged the youth of Puerto Rico for the past seven years. PECES offers support and services that revive the indomitable spirits of these youth. From education to leadership training to community service the lives of the youth are transformed from desperation to hope, from despair to empowerment. PECES impacts over 1500 youth each year through our alternative high school and a variety of other services.
The current generation of youth in Puerto Rico have faced challenge after challenge: schools closed because of earthquakes and COVID-19; hurricanes, floodings, high incidence of violence and many other social problems. Recent research has highlighted how they have fallen behind academically. We know that the emotional impact goes deeper. They need a different educational/life approach that helps them catch up, heal and reach their full potential.
This project will strengthen PECES' alternative high school and other supportive services, which have facilitated the development of thousands youth and adolescents in the eastern region of Puerto Rico. Our youth focus strategy combines personalized education, psychological and social work support, skills for jobs, entrepreneurial education, vocational and work experience, arts, sports, prevention workshops, and community service.
For almost 40 years, PECES has worked with youth and adolescents throughout southeastern Puerto Rico. Our alternative education model and social impact services have proven to change the lives of our participants and their families. We have been able to sustain graduation rates through out the past years by providing close support to students and their families. Youth have become community leaders and now second and third generation of youth and adolescents are following in these powerful steps.
