MHPSS Training in Ormoc City
Ormoc City
On June 30th IsraAID started its second phase of Psycho-Social support training program in Ormoc City. The program, each month provides training about a different aspect that is related to the family. The month of July focused on Adolescence and on the month of August we started the training about neglect and abuse. The training is been conducted to four main groups, each group is been trained for two days. The program is a one year long program that will address different topics regarding family consulting each month. Each month the same participants will attend the training, who will be from four different departments:
Group 1- Department of Health Midwifes and health workers (18 participants arrived to the training).
Group 2- Department of Education: teachers, guidance counselors, school nurses (18 participants arrived to the training).
Group 3 Disaster Responders: police, religious sectors, prison officers, firefighters 18 participants arrived to the training).
In this group more people will be called to the next training, we had some difficulties with the police. Furthermore the army will also be invited to the next training.
Group 4- City Social Welfare and Development: social workers (20 participants arrived to the training).
In each group there are members from the original core team, in total there were 10 core team members in the training. IsraAID see it as important to continue and expand their involvement in the program and their roles in the communities using these tools and knowledge.
To the question "do you think this training is relevant after the Super Typhoon Yolanda" we got the following feedback:
"There are cases of distorted family due to Yolanda. I think it would be a good step to focus on family as a process of recovering from the destruction of Yolanda. Whatever material help we can receive, it will not help us fully recover if our family is unstable".
"Before and after Yolanda this training is very important because this is the issues concerned -the family - the adolescent etc. This topic is very useful in every aspect of how we deal with our personal life and especially dealings with our job - our clients. Thanks IsraAID, this seminar broadens my knowledge and widens my wisdom."
"It is important after Yolanda because many people are so much affected with what happened that up to now they have not yet adjusted psychologically."
"Topics are very useful and this will secure a simple gate way for the learners to recover from traumatic experience after the typhoon".

Training to Bunk House leader as part of IOM program in Ormoc City
IsraAID with its holistic view wishes to reach a wide circle of trainees that will be able to wisely use the training materials. Hence IsraAID recognize the importance of training for the care providers as well.
On July 14-15 and 16-17, 2014 IsraAID carried out a two-day seminar for IOM bunk house managers and the bunk house leaders (residences of the bunk house that are the community organizers in the site). In each groups there were 20 participants. IOM and the bunk house leaders are working in the temporary shelter, and working for better management and community life there. Hence the community leaders focused those days on Basic PH, Safe place and Body, mind and traumatic stress.
After conducting the training IsraAID with IOM and the bunk houses leaders shifted to implementation phase. A two hours session was led by leaders of the camps who attended the training. Before the session, a preliminary meeting took place, with each group of leaders of the camp. The purpose of the preliminary meeting was to plan the training. Leaders chose the contents and which games they want to engage in, the times for session and they took the responsibility to convene the participants and guide the activity.. On July 21-22, the meeting and the activity about Basic PH was conducted in Can-antog bunk house to 20 people. On July 26-28th, the meeting and activities were held in Conception Bunk House to 40 people during two days. The activity was very successful. Leaders guided the content independently and it was clear that the leaders have internalized the subjects they learned in training. In addition, participants greatly enjoyed the games and they were attentive during sessions. It seems that the the experience was a positive experience for the leaders: it improved their sense of self-efficacy as well as the orientation of their group.

The workshop gathered 11 girls, in the ages of 12-18, those girls do not go to school yet, because they are still in danger and afraid to socialize. Hence it was not surprising that the girls were vey shy in the activity, but the art experience helped them to open, and to share a little bit from their troubles.

Training Outside of Ormoc City- Red Cross Manila
On June 10th-12th IsraAID conducted a four day training to the department of social services of the Red Cross, and most of the 24 participants worked in teams of first respond psychosocial support .Over the three days, it became more and more apparent that the participants experience accumulative stress. Also, it was apparent that the training that they received to perform psychosocial support, was far from enough.
The participants engaged with the expressive arts activities and greatly enjoyed it. The sponge, body map and the personal/communal circles of resources/challenges were the expressive activities that really enabled certain amount of discharge. The additional embodied activities with the stress timeline and enactment of basic-PH enabled them to absorb the content as well.
