Safeguarding Poland Syndrome Care: A Catalyst for Strategic Growth
Our Story: A Pivotal Step ForwardEarlier this year, PIP-UK embarked on an essential journey to strengthen our operational foundations and build long-term sustainability. Protecting the UK's only specialist Poland Syndrome register and clinical pathways for over 300 families worldwide requires dedicated, expert coordination. This project, made possible by The Spiegel Foundations visionary support, provided the exact operational catalyst we needed to scale our reach and secure our future.
Rather than just maintaining the status quo, this gift allowed us to make a strategic investment in our core team, Sam and Hannah and bring on new core team members in Cheryl and Polina. By expanding their capacity, we built a resilient operational roadmap that has elevated our organisation from steady management to active, dynamic growth.
Without this foundational support, we would not have had the headspace or capacity to expand our hospital clinics, launch our youth initiatives, or secure the exciting new funding streams that are now powering our mission.
The Impact & Ripple EffectBecause of the solid operational floor established by this project, PIP-UK has experienced an extraordinary period of growth. Over the last six months, this single stewardship grant has helped us unlock and leverage significant new momentum:
£20,000 National Lottery Young Ambassadors Project: Expanding our youth leadership program to build confidence, peer connections, and advocacy skills among young people led by one of our young people, Polina.
£3,000 Souter Charitable Trust Grant: Directly supporting and maintaining our world-first NHS specialist Poland Syndrome clinic pathways.
£5,000 Maryland Trust Grant (+ £5,000 Pledge for Next Year): Providing multi-year funding to strengthen our ongoing family support networks.
£110,000+ Pipeline Applications: We are currently finalising a £90,000 National Lottery Heritage Fund bid to preserve our community’s history, alongside a £20,000 National Lottery Wales application to increase regional engagement.
Beyond the strategic growth, this project protects the everyday lives of the people we serve.
Our partnership with the NHS specialist clinic in Birmingham continues to thrive, helping reduce diagnosis times by up to 7–8 years and offering families multi-disciplinary medical care. Our Young Ambassadors project is flourishing under Polina's guidance, giving isolated teenagers a safe, creative platform to connect. Meanwhile, Hannah and Cheryl ensure our future remains secure and our core community platforms remain vibrant, responsive, and welcoming.
