Increase Paediatric Palliative Care in KZN, SA

By Tracey Brand | Director

How can it already be December? It feels like yesterday we were looking forward to what 2025 had to offer and now we are getting ready for 2026. Our theme as a team, I’m sure many people adopted something similar, was 202thrive. This year has been one of many challenges but also great success.

Our team has seen over 350 new patients to date and many lives have been changed. Through the generosity of our supporters we have been able to assist families with food parcels, prams, wheelchairs and much needed psychosocial support. One of those that have benefited is MN, a 2-year-old little girl who was born with hydrocephaly which has caused neurological issues. She had a shunt inserted to relieve the intra-cranial pressure. She is unable to walk but brings her mom such joy.

MN’s mom lost both her parents, her home and all their belongings in the horrific floods that ravaged KZN. When MN was born it was time for a new chapter – the chapter however was not as her mom imagined. In the beginning there was great uncertainty as to whether MN would survive. However, she proved everyone wrong. One big problem for MN’s mom was being able to get MN to her appointments as she is getting too big and heavy to carry. Today we were able to give her a pram that will make mom’s life a little bit easier as well as a food parcel that will bring some December cheer.

Thank you to everyone for your continued support and enabling Umduduzi to be the “comforter” that we always strive or thrive to be. We wish you and your loved ones a blessed festive season and may 2026 be everything you hope it to be.
