Happy Birthday to us! Umduduzi – Hospice Care for Children is 10 years old this year. What an incredible journey it has been. Who would have thought that so much would be achieved when we started gingerly down this road in January 2013?
Since 2013 our staff compliment has increased from 3 to 11. We are running two play programmes – one at the busiest paediatric hospitals in the Durban Functional Region and one at the TB MDR/XDR ward where children spend 3-6 months receiving TB treatment. Our clinical team that was previously a doctor and a social worker now boasts a palliative care trained neonatologist (providing ante-natal support to mother’s whose babies have poor prognoses), a specialised translator, and 5 retired nurses providing 8 hours each a week.
Since our inception in 2013 we have provided palliative care to over 2500 children and their families. On average we see 300 new patients a year, that does not include those that are still part of our programme from previous years. Already this year we have seen over 100 new patients and it is only May!
Our founding directors, Dr Julia Ambler and Ms Tracey Brand have been recognised for their expertise and have been instrumental in developing the Provincial Paediatric Palliative Care Plan for the KZN Department of Health. They have been travelling KZN presenting the plan and gathering “champions” to take palliative care forward in the various districts within the province. They have also been part of developing and providing the training for these “champions”.
Dr Ambler’s work has been recognised and she is now the only paid, by the Department of Health, paediatric palliative care provider in the country – 10 hours a week. It’s not a lot but it is recognition for the work that is being achieved and the importance of the work that we are doing.
This year saw the first palliative care conference since pre-COVID take place in Cape Town in April 2023. Both Julia and Tracey were integral in the planning of the conference. Julia was one of the co-chairs and Tracey presented a paper and chaired a session. There were 400 delegates – an indication of the desire for knowledge in the adult and children’s fields – with so many new faces amongst those we have walked alongside for so many years.
If we reflect on the 10 amazing years that we have been privileged to do the amazing work we do, we are left with an incredible sense of being blessed. There have definitely been dark days but the good outnumber them exponentially. As this crazy journey continues we look forward to more people recognising that palliative care is imperative and that it is not just about end-of-life. It is about quality of life in the time that you have.
Thank you to each and every one of you for recognising what we have done and are still doing and for supporting us through this incredible journey!
