Kiilu, a 13-year-old from Mombasa, was found living on the streets after being abandoned by his mother, who was overwhelmed by poverty and used her children to beg for her personal needs. Severely malnourished, emotionally withdrawn, and illiterate, Kiilu had never attended school and was unaware of his rights.
Through consistent outreach, catch-up education, and papasa activities, Kiilu’s situation was brought to light. Despite resistance from his mother—who opposed his schooling and disrupted care arrangements—Kiilu began participating in programs at a safe space. With a supportive teacher and a learner-friendly curriculum, he gained literacy skills, confidence, and motivation. Securing stable care was a major challenge due to his mother’s interference.
However, Kiilu eventually requested foster care, realizing the need for a peaceful, nurturing environment. His health and emotional well-being improved significantly. He began visiting his mother independently, showing emotional growth. With support from social workers, teachers, and community leaders, Kiilu transitioned from a life of neglect to one of opportunity. Now thriving in school and sports, with improved self-esteem and friendships, Kiilu’s journey confirms how child-centered and consistent intervention can restore dignity, hope, and a future.
We are greatful for the continued support.
