" I would like to be driver. A local driver." This is what Biko, our little boy of 11 years told us when he first came to the safe space. Biko is a polite boy who is an orphan and most of the time he is quiet and hides his sadness. His extended family abandoned him and ended up in the streets. He has very littel education.
However, as he conutinued to buid relationship with people in the safe space, he has started to realise his strenghts and abilities. He is the best in pool table. Everyday he looks forward at defending his posisiton. The feeling he gets after playing a pool match of around 15 minutes and after beating his opponents including Glad's House Director is immeasureable. He gets real joy and happiness. He gets real recognition and this has been translating into his self esteeem.
Biko is now cheerful and has learnt to express himself in the fiedl and in class too. His progress in class has really improved and now he is looking forward to joining school. Him being the best in the pool table is rekindling the other areas in his life. Biko is lighing his own canlde.
