Dear GlobalGiving Team,
Greetings from Indonesia!
I hope this report finds you well during this challenging time, given the impact that COVID-19 is having around the world. YAKKUM Emergency Unit (YEU) continues to monitor the situation should there be any significant changes to the construction process and to address the needs of the beneficiaries as they are also dealing with this difficult situation.
YEU received USD 25,000 grant from GlobalGiving Foundation that has been used to re-construct 11 accessible houses for vulnerable populations affected by the earthquake and tsunami in Central Sulawesi-Indonesia. The construction work began in April 2020 and will complete before November 2020. We will not be able to deliver the aim of our project, to improve the accessible environment for the vulnerable persons, without the support from the local masons, bricklayers and carpenters who are willing to put safe building code into practice and follow the guidance from our architect.
Currently, YEU team is still monitoring the completion of some houses, consulting with the beneficiaries and families on the design, and identifying how far the beneficiaries can use the accessible accommodation in the house. COVID-19 slightly delayed the project delivery in April and May 2020, especially when there were decreased in labours as well as the construction materials.
This construction project is not only targeting persons with disability or elderly who have difficulty in mobility, but beyond that, it is also educating their families and communities on how to ensure safety, healthy and inclusiveness in treating vulnerable groups in daily basis. Beneficiaries who have stayed in the new accessible houses expressed their gratitude and joy to explore the house freely without any barrier. This highlights something that they treasure the most after the hardship after the emergency phase 2018-2019.
As of end of June 2020, YEU was able manage 40% from the total grant and will continue to deliver the project until its completion in the next five months. In responding to the current pandemic and the need for handwashing stations in public places, YEU team is planning to target also construction of handwashing units in public schools, village offices, mosques or churches or elderly homes in Central Sulawesi. For this additional activity, YEU needs to consult first with GlobalGiving Team in order to use some of the grant for this particular needs arising from the target communities.
We will keep you posted on progress of the construction and look forward to your response.
With appreciation for all your tremendous support,
YEU Team
