As of 21 October 2018, 2,256 people are known to have died following the earthquake and tsunami in Central Sulawesi occurred on 28th September, 2018. An estimated 67,000 houses have been damaged and almost 223,751 people are currently displaced. YEU would like to focus its response to build inclusive disaster resilient in partnership with communities. Temporary and permanent construction housing programs from the government and NGOs are still ongoing. However, because the needs are still high, in the shelter sub-cluster meeting, the government conveyed the need for housing construction and the government still hoped for assistance from humanitarian agencies. However, government and NGOs project; have not included the inclusive aspects for the housing, even though the need for access is quite high because accessibility is also crucial.
YEU will continue housing project which is currently built 45 housing with accessible toilet. YEU will conduct an assessment to potential beneficiaries, to see the location and to ensure the legality of the land, since YEU will not buy land. After discussing and asking feedback from the beneficiaries, there will be an agreement with the beneficiaries. Beneficiaries and families will seek the handyman to build the house. The beneficiaries will help in the monitoring process during construction.
The design is not only benefited for people with disabilities, but also for elderly and third trimester pregnant women, since equipped with special facilities and accessories such as making ramps and handrails including wider bathrooms so that people with wheelchair can access. In addition, familiarizing the community becomes active in the development process because it is involved from the beginning of the process in an accountable and inclusive manner.
