Introduction
In EFA Cameroon’s commitment to contribute HIV/AIDS prevention in Cameroon, she actively participated in the 24th edition of the AIDS Free Holiday by carrying out a campaign from August 17–20, 2026 in Mokio, Lalawaï, and Mbidémé of the Tokombéré Health District, Cameroon. Organized under the theme “Responsible Holidays, Youth Without AIDS”, the campaign aimed to reduce HIV prevalence among youth, encourage voluntary testing, and promote responsible health practices.
Activities & Outreach
Educational sessions: 311 people participated in peer group discussions on HIV, syphilis, malaria, cholera, and hygiene.
Community sensitization: 204 individuals were reached at Lalawaï market, and 183 in Mbidémé village.
Voluntary testing: 118 people were tested for HIV; 2 positive cases were identified and referred to “UPEC (Unite de Prise en Charge)” for care.
Prevention materials: 300 male and 7 female condoms, plus lubricants, were distributed.
Community engagement: 8 leaders and 5 and numerous Community health mobilizing agents supported mobilization, ensuring strong participation.
Impact Story One young mother shared
“Knowing my status during pregnancy gave me peace of mind. The campaign helped me understand how to protect myself and my baby.” This constituent of Mokio's testimonial reflects the campaign’s success in creating safe spaces for dialogue and empowering individuals to take their health seriously.
Challenges & Lessons
Heavy rains, transport breakdowns, and difficulty locating lost patients to followup limited some activities. However, the campaign demonstrated that combining sensitization with onsite testing increases voluntary participation. The engagement of community mobilizing agents proved essential for mobilization and trustbuilding.
Future Activity
With the support of GlobalGiving, EFA Cameroon will carry out the following activities:
- follow up to make those who tested positive are put on treatment.
- Distribute individual school supplies to selected OVCs in the Far North Region of Cameroon.
Conclusion
Overall, the campaign exceeded its targets, reaching 515 people with awareness messages and testing 118 individuals. Despite logistical challenges, the initiative strengthened community knowledge, improved access to testing, and ensured referral of positive cases to care. These results highlight the importance of sustained, communitybased HIV prevention efforts in Tokombéré Health District.
