Summary

This project will provide monthly food baskets to vulnerable schoolchildren and their families across six rural villages in Mozambique. Schools are closed due to COVID-19 and students are no longer able to depend on daily school lunches. To prevent these children from going hungry at home, the Mozambique School Lunch Initiative is providing monthly food baskets to over 1,000 children and their families, stocked with key staples and fresh produce purchased from local farmers.

Challenge

For many of the 1,112 children served by the Mozambique School Lunch Initiative, school lunch was the only hot meal they would eat every day. Now that schools are closed due to COVID-19, they are at higher risk of malnutrition and the long-term consequences of chronic hunger. Food insecurity is very high in their villages and there are currently no other programs providing food support. This project will ensure that each child receives a monthly food basket to help alleviate hunger at home.

Solution

Every month, each student enrolled in the six rural primary schools served by the Mozambique School Lunch Initiative receives a food basket stocked with key staples and fresh produce, including fortified maize flour, beans, kale, beets, and tomatoes. These food baskets help ensure that children have enough to eat at home and are receiving the nutrition they need to grow and thrive. In addition, the fresh produce is purchased from local farmers, providing a valuable source of income.

Long-Term Impact

Childhood malnutrition has long-term consequences for both physical and cognitive development. It is essential that these kids are not going hungry at home now so that they are ready to learn when they get back to school. This project will support the continued delivery of monthly food baskets to 1,112 children and their families in rural Mozambique. In doing so, these children will have the nutrition they need to grow and make a full recovery once schools re-open.
