Muhedin is a 40-year-old man living in the Somali Region of Ethiopia. With four children, Muhedin has described life in his kebele, or village, as “difficult.” One of the largest challenges for Muhedin and his family? Access to clean water.
The well in their neighborhood did not function for three years, causing Muhedin and his children to travel for approximately two hours to access clean water – water that is not spoiled, for instance, by waste from people or cattle. Further complicating this task, the area Muhedin and his family go to retrieve water often faces conflict, resulting in additional protection concerns. With such difficulties, Muhedin’s children repeatedly visit the health centers as they endure disease and sickness like diarrhea and stomach pain due to drinking and using contaminated water.
To address these critical needs, International Medical Corps rehabilitated the well in Muhedin’s village and equipped it with a hand pump for easier functioning. It is now providing water for the entire community, serving Muhedin’s friends and neighbors as well as his family.
A local water, sanitation and hygiene committee will maintain the well to ensure sustainability and long-term access to clean water. Muhedin has described the renewed access to clean and potable water as a “miracle.”
