Summary

She Steps Forward International is providing basic essentials (e.g., food, toiletries), medical equipment (e.g., crutches, wheelchairs), and funding for skills training to 100+ disabled individuals (young and old) who seek care at the Ummoja Disability Center, located in one of the lowest-income areas of Nairobi, Kenya. By investing in the care and training of this vulnerable population, we are breaking barriers and providing dignity to those Kenyans who need it most.

Challenge

A 2019 census report showed that 2.2% of Kenyans live with some form of disability. Mobility issues, blindness, and cognitive impairment are the top 3 disabilities encountered. The Ummoja Disability Center provides resources to 100+ disabled persons and/or their caregivers on a daily basis. Therefore, this project will provide a generous amount of funding, helping the Center run its day programs and provide much-needed humanitarian relief to these precious individuals.

Solution

SSFI, through the Ummoja Disability Center, is helping to provide the disabled community of Nairobi access to several effective day programs designed to provide one-to-one counseling, group support, and/or skills training. Clients of the Center also receive a meal during day programs when appropriate. As part of the Center's outreach efforts, clients may be eligible to receive a food basket, personal care items, and medical supplies. Mothers may be gifted school fees for qualified children.

Long-Term Impact

Investing in this vulnerable population from a holistic approach (e.g., physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and intellectual) provides the best chance that each client can live a life of dignity and respect despite their disability and challenges.
