Dear Supporters,
We are working in Cusco with local and international NGO in order to preserve the Piuray Lagoon, one of the main sources of water for Cusco city, a major tourist capital for Peru. On these past months, we have focused our efforts in reforestation around the lagoon and teaching English with a focus on conservation.
During this first part of the year, we have designed and executed different actions within the communities’ needs, in order to accomplish our Water Conservation goals.
We focused on reforestation, helping 23 families and two community associations alongside the Piura-Ccorimarca basin in Cusco. We got together with community members and support them with reforestation on the area. This has been possible through the help of our local partner, Centro Bartolomé de las Casas and our international partner The Nature Conservancy.
In terms of English, GVI volunteers and staff started an English for Business Program with two community associations, Manta de Oro – Ocutuan Community and Kusi Kausay – Pongobamba community, to help them out in their rural tourism business that also benefits the Piuray lagoon conservation. We worked from January until beginning of May with 24 students, mainly women, once a week at the communities. We set up a methodology for people that speak only Quechua, the native language, and in many cases that could not write or read. A great challenge from our end but great results, as our adult students are now able to present themselves and recognize basic vocabulary in English.
We look forward to sharing more with you in the months to come!
All the best,
Peru Water
