Education Projects
Mdumbi pre-school is one of the sustainable projects at TransCape. It aims to provide good quality education to the entire community, to provide shelter for children aged two to six years old in the Mankosi and surrounding villages as well as to provide a well-balanced diet to the children. Due to the pandemic, the school opened on 15 February. This year we admitted fifty-five children aged two - six years old with thirty-five children in Grade N and twenty in Grade R. Mdumbi pre-school is also assisting a nearby pre-school, Nonkqubela. The school supports twenty-seven children including fourteen boys and thirteen girls. For obvious reasons many of last year’s students are facing challenges and we are trying our best to catch them up. Under the circumstances, they are doing very well. They are working hard but also have fun with arts and crafts with our volunteers. We are also lucky to have had a new jungle gym donated and the children are loving it. We look forward to the rest of the term.
After school Enrichment program
The purpose of this program is to help the children of Mankosi villages to improve in English, Mathematics, Art, Crafts, and Computer Literacy. We also assist with homework and play educational games which develop thinking skills and improve in brain development. Due to the pandemic, this year the school opened on 15 February with forty-five students in attendance. This year students are coming from as far as Ngcobo village and Luqolweni village as we have organized transport for them. We have one volunteer who is helping particularly with computer lessons. Due to the pandemic, the students are divided into smaller groups for social distancing. All in all, the after-school program is doing well considering the pandemic.
This year we supported 4 students, Masithembe, Gcinakazi, Nolutho, and Abonga, they are all from the Mankosi area. The learners who get the scholarship are chosen by Transcape from our after-school program. We look for those who are active and doing well in school. After selecting we look for the best possible school and organize their registrations. Masithembe is doing grade 11, Gcinakazi also in grade 11, Nolutho grade 10, and Abonga passed his grade 12 but did not get the school because there was a delay in his applications. We have re-applied for the late applications. These three students are doing well and there are no results for the first quarter yet.
We would like to thank you from the bottom of our heart for your ongoing support!!
Without you, we would be nothing.
Yours Astrid Gifford
