Thanks to your support, we are currently able to serve approximately 600 youth in the Providence area through our arts programming this Winter Session! This is a huge jump since Fall Session, where we were able to serve approximately 200 youth. We have programs located at our Broad Street studios, various middle schools through the Providence After School Alliance and our AmeriCorps Turnaround Teaching Artist Project, Boys & Girls Club, and the Vartan Gregorian Elementary School. Our studios are packed with students working on 3D modeling programs, constructing ceramic "Retablos" (small boxes containing narrative scenes), hand-drawn flip-book animations, and more! Take a look at our Winter Session photo album to see what we've been up to.
The new CityArts STEAM Friday Residency Project engages 380 Vartan Gregorian Elementary School K-5 students and classroom teachers in art and design projects that encourage "design-thinking", creativity, and problem-solving. These projects connect to school curricular themes in Life Science, Social Studies, Global Connections and Community Cultures, while at the same time provide students with the opportunity to expand their art/design thinking and develop skills beyond the regular art class.
Mari Maria is a Winter Session Teaching Artist in Hip Hop Dance at the Roger Williams Middle School. We sat down with her to chat about her experiences of being a student and now a Teaching Artist at Roger Williams. Read more on our blog, here! You can also read more about our new Winter Session Teaching Artists, their creative practices, and why they love teaching at CityArts, here!
We are looking forward to completing another successful session with our Teachback event on March 31. This is where our youth teach BACK what they've learned to their friends, families, and Providence community! CityArts Gallery + Studios, 891 Broad St., Providence, RI 02907, 5:15-7:15 PM.
Thank you once again, for your continued support of our mission!
¡CityArts! is a nonprofit youth arts agency, with a mission based on the ideal that all children should have access to arts learning as an essential part of childhood and youth development, regardless of socio-economic background. Your leadership will help support our free creative arts classes in art and design, digital media, music, dance and theatre for over 900 urban, at-risk elementary and middle school youth. These quality arts learning opportunities help youth gain the skills and experiences they need to become successful in school and in life.
