Providence CityArts helps over 900 kids find their creative pathway to a positive future and a just society. For our Southside youth, where 1 out of 3 children live in poverty, arts access can be life changing. CityArts is a NAHYP award-winning agency, with free classes that help youth develop lifelong skills and habits of inquiry--to explore ideas through art/design, media, music and dance. Creativity, imagination and innovation are the tools we provide to succeed in school and in life!
The Southside neighborhoods of Providence have the highest rate of childhood poverty amongst our New England states (1 of 3) and are home to a majority of the District's lowest-performing High Priority public schools. Urban youth lack access to creative learning opportunities that can make a difference. Lack of resources and supports can lead to dangerous pathways. For elementary and middle school youth, early years MATTER to build strong, positive outcomes in school and in life.
CityArts Creative Urban Arts and Youth Program will serve over 900 youth this year through free afterschool, summer classes and artist residencies. CityArts teaching artists inspire creativity, personal growth and fulfillment, and deep connections to learning beyond art-making skills. We aim to provide elementary and middle school youth with a wide range of multi-disciplinary choices in the arts in order for them to explore ideas, problem-solve, and discover their creative voice.
Creativity, imagination, exploration and problem-solving thru CityArts classes is the platform from which youth grow as young people and creative contributors to our future society. CityArts serves 900+ urban youth. Our alums tell us best about CityArts impact on their lives. U.Mass senior, Victoria says, "I could be myself and be accepted for who I was in a world that told me 'being yourself isn't good enough'. I want to help change lives, to be for someone else the way CityArts was for me."
