As one of five children, 23-year-old “Sajita” started working immediately after her high school graduation to help support her family of seven. Knowing she was capable of more than a low-paying retail job, Sajita reached out to NYF for career counseling. She enrolled in the 3-month electrical training course at Olgapuri Vocational School.
Having a female instructor, Mandira, made it a little easier to be the only woman among 20 students. After graduation, Sajita quickly found a job earning 15,000 NPR (Nepalese rupees) per month – well over the average per capita income of 9,800 NPR per month.
Not only is Sajita helping to support her siblings, but she’s also already thinking ahead to advanced training – and even hopes to one day run her own electrical shop in her village.
