Provide tools to rural women startup farmers in SA

In June 2017 Born to Succeed Women conducted a Young Women for Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Workshop in Turfloop, Polokwane.   

The Training Workshop took place over 3 days.

Day 1 – Leadership

Participants were taught about CV writing and budgeting using the Khwela tool. The classes committed to track their expenses as a group as from 1^st of July.

Day 2 - Sustainable Development Goals

A local entrepreneur, Sadie provided an SDG overview to five groups. Each group was tasked to translate three SGDs from English to Northern Sotho, and to briefly present a summary of their work. The participants were then taught about problem solving, each group held a discussion to decide which SDG was the biggest community challenge.

The five groups identified the following:

• SDG 3- Good Health and Well Being
• SDG 4- Quality Education
• SDG 5- Clean Water and Sanitation
• SDG 10- Reduced Inequalities and
• SDG 12- Responsible Consumption and Production

Day 3- Project proposal

Anele, Marketing Director at Black Management Forum upskilled the groups on pitching their ideas. They were then given an opportunity to rehearse their pitch and be given feedback. During pitch rehearsals, the judges reviewed their project proposals. The judges were a combination of facilitators and National Youth Development Agency Polokwane Branch Manager, Percy. The winning project was SDG 3 who won; a Nelson Mandela note book, chocolates, a mentor from Accenture for each group member, a radio interview and Born to Succeed will support the team in delivering their programme.

Outcomes of the workshop:

1. Each participant has a biography they can use in their CV
2. Participants know about the principles of budgeting
3. Each participant, knows at least 3 SDGs
4. Five projects were developed
5. Born to Succeed will be supporting the implementation of a health and well-being project in Polokwane

Overall the Young Women for Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Workshop was a success with a total of 18 young women receiving a certificate from the programme. We hope to do more of these programmes around South Africa.
