Provide Speech Therapy for 28,710 Kids in Ghana

In a small village nestled in the heart of Ghana, a young boy named Kofi sat silently under the shade of a mango tree, watching other children play. At seven years old, Kofi had never spoken a word. His parents, though loving, didn’t know how to help him. They had never heard of speech therapy and assumed his silence was just how he was born.

Kofi’s story is not unique. Across Ghana, thousands of children face similar challenges. Speech and language disorders, often caused by developmental delays, hearing impairments, or neurological conditions, go untreated due to a lack of awareness and resources. In a country of over 30 million people, there are fewer than 50 certified speech therapists, and most are concentrated in urban areas. For families in rural villages, hope can feel out of reach.

But hope arrived in the form of Affinity Access International and our "Voice for Every Child" project.

The Journey Begins

When our team first arrived in Ghana, we knew the challenge was immense. We met children like Kofi—bright, curious, and full of potential—but unable to express themselves. We met parents who longed to hear their children’s voices but didn’t know where to turn. And we met teachers who struggled to support students with speech and language challenges in overcrowded classrooms.

We knew we had to act. But we also knew that to create lasting change, we couldn’t do it alone.

Building a Sustainable Solution

Our approach was simple yet transformative: empower local communities to help their own children.

1. Training Local Heroes
   We partnered with Ghanaian universities and international experts to train 150 community health workers, teachers, and volunteers in basic speech therapy techniques. These local champions became the backbone of our project, bringing care to the most remote corners of the country.

2. Mobile Therapy Units
   To reach children like Kofi, we deployed 10 mobile therapy units—vans equipped with diagnostic tools, therapy materials, and trained professionals. These units traveled to villages, schools, and community centers, providing free screenings and therapy sessions.

3. Community Awareness
   We launched radio programs and workshops to educate parents and caregivers about speech and language development. We taught them simple exercises to practice at home and encouraged them to seek help early.

4. School-Based Programs
   We worked with 50 schools to integrate speech therapy into their daily routines. Teachers learned how to identify speech challenges and support students in the classroom.

5. Vocational Skills Training for Special Needs Kids
   Recognizing that many children with speech and language challenges also face barriers to employment as they grow older, we introduced vocational skills training for older children and teens. Through partnerships with local artisans and businesses, we provided training in skills like bead-making, tailoring, carpentry, and agriculture. These programs not only build confidence but also create pathways to financial independence.

Kofi’s Transformation

When our mobile unit arrived in Kofi’s village, his mother brought him in, hesitant but hopeful. After an initial assessment, our team began working with him twice a week. They used games, pictures, and sounds to help him connect words to objects and emotions.

Progress was slow at first, but Kofi’s determination was unwavering. Then, one day, after six months of therapy, Kofi looked at his mother and said his first words: “Thank you.”

Tears streamed down his mother’s face as she hugged him tightly. For the first time, she heard her son’s voice. For the first time, Kofi could tell her what he wanted, how he felt, and what he dreamed of.

As Kofi grew older, he joined our vocational skills program, where he discovered a talent for carpentry. Today, he is not only communicating confidently but also building furniture that his family sells at the local market. Kofi’s future, once uncertain, is now full of promise.

The Ripple Effect

Kofi’s story is just one of thousands. Across Ghana, 28,710 children have received speech therapy through our project. Parents report that their children are happier, more confident, and better able to connect with others. Teachers say their classrooms are more inclusive, and communities are more aware of the importance of early intervention.

But the impact doesn’t stop there. By training local professionals and providing vocational skills training, we’ve created a sustainable network of care and opportunity that will continue to grow. The 150 therapists we’ve trained are now mentoring others, ensuring that even more children will benefit in the years to come.
