Iis is a 17-year-old student who is enrolled in the Sewing Class at YUM Vocational Training Centre in Cipanas. Her father is a laborer and her mother is a housewife. Together with her other 4 siblings, they live in a small rented house near YUM’s site. Now, Iis is in her final year of study, and next year she will do the final examination to graduate from high school. Iis has no plan to continue her study to a higher-level due to her family’s financial situation, therefore enrolling in the Sewing Class is her safety plan. Her plan is to work in the garment industry for a few years to help support her family, and to save some money to open her own tailor’s shop.
Another story is from Irgy, he is also in his last year of high school. He believes that by having the ability to speak and write in English, he will have a better opportunity to get a job in the future. He does have English lessons in school twice a week, but for him this is not enough to reach his goal. At YUM-VTC, he learns more vocabulary, is more motivated to speak in English, and has the chance to talk with a native English speaker.
Iis and Irgy are just two examples of the youth in the area. Most of them have limited access to continue their education to a higher-level. In this area it is also still common for the older sibling in a family who has graduated from high school, to be responsible for the other family members. Therefore many of them have to work at a very young age and with limited skills.
YUM wishes to continue giving the oppurtunity for the disadvantaged youth in the area to gain new skills or upgrade their existing skills, which could help place them in good employment. We hope our long term impact will be to break the cycle of poverty in their family.
By donating $10, you will be able to support one tutor’s fee for one session in the YUM-Vocational Training Center. You will help to give a chance for youth like Iis and Irgy to enroll in these classes for free.
