Putting Theory into Practice: Our Interns Hit the Ground Running

At YUM's Vocational Training Centre in Bukit Batu, the internship part of our Hospitality & Tourism Diploma Program is where things really come together for our students. It's their chance to take everything they've learned in the classroom and actually put it to work in real hotels and resorts — building the kind of confidence and professionalism you just can't get from textbooks alone. To make this possible, we've built partnerships with several hotels and tourism businesses in Palangka Raya.

Here's how it works: after a full semester of classroom learning, students spend three months in their second semester out in the field, fully immersed in the day-to-day operations of their host organization. Each partner places interns wherever they're needed most, giving students a real taste of how the industry runs.

This time around, six students from Batch 6 (who started back in January) wrapped up their three-month internships, which kicked off in June. They spent their time at Best Western Batang Garing Hotel, Matan Andau Resort, and Rungan Sari Meeting Center & Resort.

At Best Western Batang Garing Hotel, interns got to rotate between Food & Beverage and Public Areas. But at Rungan Sari and Matan Andau, the experience went even further — students rotated through nearly every department, from Front Office to F&B, Public Areas, Room Service, and Laundry. They even took on extra responsibilities like preparing financial reports and handling cash transactions, giving them a well-rounded, hands-on view of what running a hotel really looks like.

One of the internship supervisors, from Matan Andau Resort, shared:

“The presence of the interns from YUM’s Hospitality & Tourism diploma program has been a great support to our daily operations. They not only helped fill staffing gaps but also contributed fresh ideas to attract more guests. However, they did initially find the working hours challenging. especially on busy weekends when shifts could extend by a couple of hours. We sincerely hope to welcome more interns from YUM in the future.“

None of this would be possible without the generous support of our donors. Your continued partnership gives students the opportunity to gain real, hands-on experience that shapes their futures and opens doors to meaningful careers in hospitality. Thank you for believing in this program and in the potential of every student who walks through our doors.
