Provide Skills for Indonesian Unemployed Youth

The YUM Vocational Training Centre (VTC) in Cipanas – West Java - has two levels of sewing classes: Basic and Intermediate. Every new participant at the YUM sewing class has to start from a Basic level. At this level, the students learn to make patterns, cutting, using a sewing machine to sew and stitch straight, and make simple outfits like children’s clothing.

Once they finished this level, the students will receive a small report about their achievements. YUM is not giving them a certificate because after evaluation, YUM realized that there were quite a few more techniques the students needed to learn. To obtain a certificate therefore, the students have to enroll in the Intermediate class. Meanwhile as they continue to the Intermediate level, the students learn to make adult clothing with more complicated tailoring skills such as pyjamas, dresses, skirts and trousers.

“My name is Anissa. I love to design my own clothes, therefore I take this course so that I can make my own clothes. I am getting good at tailoring now and am also able to use a sewing machine, even though it is still in a basic way. Miss Ila, the tutor, is very friendly and easy to understand. I wish the YUM VTC will grow bigger than now and will be able to help more people in Cipanas.”
