2017 has brought tremendous milestones as well as changes for Global Interfaith Partnership and for the Umoja Project. We celebrated 10 years of the Umoja Project and 10 years of serving orphaned and vulnerable children in Western Kenya. Ellen Daniels-Howell, the founder of the organization passed away in May. Earlier in the year we lost Joseph Okuya our Project Manager in Kenya. However, great challenges bring a small organization together and new leaders emerge.
Linda Olasya and Leonard Otiende, Project Coordinators in Kenya have stepped up to take on more responsibility to keep operations in Kenya running smoothly. Callie Daniels-Howell soldiered on as Interim Executive Director while the Board of Directors completed a search for a new Executive Director. Denise Soltis, BS Pharm, MSGH was hired and started in August.
Meanwhile, services in Kenya have continued without interuption. The Umoja project is feeding between 3,200 to 3,400 children school lunches every day. Those school lunches have increased the success of our primary school children. More students than ever are finishing Primary School and hoping to attend Secondary School.
While we honor our past, we look to the future: the future of the Umoja Project and the future for over 3,000 children in Kenya. We are blessed by our past and inspired by our future. Below is a letter written by Ellen 10 years ago after a trip just after the project started. We hope you agree, shared faith in action is a powerful tool to lift children out of poverty.
We thank you for your support of the school lunch program!
