Drinking Water

By R.BALU | DIRECTOR

“ Providing Good water supply and sanitation to poor Dalit community in 10 villages “.

  • We all know water is precious. We also know that we are underestimating its criticality for survival of the planet itself, growth and well being of humans, animals, plants, industry etc. We should be deeply concerned with its wasteful usage, inefficient use and its contamination .As we all know the water is one of the main sources of substance that is occurring naturally and it is more helpful for the survival of the human being. It is very much necessary to go for the rain water harvestingsince rain is the first and best source to bring water to the underground. There are also many aspects related to water because the water has become one of the day to day commodities which we are in search for. There is a situation in which we will not get necessary water for day to day life and even for the drinking purpose. This particular situation is known as Drinking water scarcity in Tiruvannamalaiis one of the Districts in Tamilnaduthat is rich in all the type of resources and in the same way the water is also one of the most important resources that are available to all the   10 village people to great extent. But in some areas because of many reasons the water is not available. There will also be scarcity in such a manner that the Drinking will be spoiled because of the water scarcity.

  • All 10 project villages have been facing acute drinking water scarcity problem. Children face health problems. Women are put to tension and ill health. In essence all five villages included in this project have acute scarcity of water in general and particularly drinking water. There have always been heated tensions between waiting women in all water sources and sometimes even exchanges of blows. So much so that the phrase fights around taps has become a known phenomenon.

Tiruvannamalai city is one of the Hindu pilgrimage tourist centers where the Lord Arunachala Siva temple (Full Moon Time) 2 lash people are being arrived to this hill place. There are huge transportation of vehicle available here to bring so many goods and people have been arriving from various part of the India and outside India too countries. The hilly round road is about 14 kilometer. Pilgrimage pathway (The way which is being walk around by Pilgrimage by their faith commitment) is about 14 kms long. During the full moon day, Non-availability of drinking water always and acute scarcity of water during summer months has been the problem in the pathway.

Project sustainability in the long term

  • As indicated earlier, soon after installation of the hand pumps and dedicating them to the 10 village communities, they would be handed over to the local Authority administration.
  • After installation the bore wells would be handed over to the local Authority administration that would undertake repair works / changing of worn out parts as and when needed. An undertaking to this effect would be obtained from the local Authority presidents of the 10 project villages.
  • There are well trained skilled technicians with the Block Development Office who would be taking care of repair works.
  • Replacement would be the responsibility of the local administration and the consent of the local presidents to this effect will be obtained.

  • Local level and minor skills in bore well usages and primary maintenance were given to interested / selected Village Management Committees of each village. Being a New Pump Sets the repairs will be very less.
  • There would be economic benefits, as the male members could reach their work spots in time and concentrate more on their work instead of worrying about the water problem in families. As far as the women are concerned they would be relieved of tensions and anxieties in family and society and as a result their health could improve.

  • Technicians are hired to give training to the Community people in Maintenance of the Drinking water bore well. The Local People are
trained in the maintenance of the
Drinking water bore wells. Hand Pump Erection.

  • An day to day basis our BOSS NGO  will monitor the program and submit report on the progress of the activities review the program once in a week the accounts of the activities will be checked by the program Co-coordinator every step . Program review will be done by BOSS Project implementation action chart and the proposed achievement will be prepared in the form of the charts the BOSS team will evaluate the performance once in a week meeting. The BOSS evaluation team will visit the project area at the end of the period will submit the objective.  BOSS Project implementation action committee will also follow up this program. Evaluation report and that will be forwarded the supportive agency.
  • A Village Water Committee formed for regulating water services at the village level.

Tariff system operationalised for achieving full recovery of Operation and Maintenance cost and at least 25% of the capital investment and replacement cost from the water users.

A simple monitoring system for pumping hours, power consumption, water quality, expenditures and revenue collection etc.

Power pump operators and hand pump mechanics trained to repair and keep stock of minimum required tools and spares for maintenance repairs and emergency repairs.

Existing system of open wells, hand pumps, water pipelines and connections, that were earlier in a state of disuse, were repaired.

People were trained to keep and handle their drinking water at household level in a hygienic manner to avoid bacterial contamination. They were also taught better hygiene practices such as keeping areas around the water collection points .
