Over the past several months, KRC has continued to support students and teachers at The Peace Education Centre (TPEC). Thanks to new volunteers, TPEC students are taking more field trips than ever before. These experiences give students the chance to explore Kuala Lumpur, learn in new environments, and simply enjoy experiences that many children would otherwise never have.
One of the most important improvements this year has been the construction of a new gate in front of the school. One of TPEC’s classrooms is located outside the main building, directly beside the sidewalk, meaning pedestrians would regularly walk behind the students while class was in session. The new gate now provides the outdoor classroom with an actual wall and creates a clear boundary between the school and the surrounding community. This simple addition has made the learning environment safer, more secure, and more focused for students and teachers.
KRC also organized a free dental clinic for TPEC students, bringing in a team of U.S. dentists and dental hygienists to provide dental screenings, cleanings, and care. For many students, this was an opportunity to receive professional dental care that would otherwise be difficult to access. Beyond addressing immediate needs, the clinic also helped students learn more about caring for their teeth and overall health.
KRC continues to provide practical support through utilities, daily lunches, and volunteers who serve alongside the TPEC community. But we are also thinking about what happens after students leave the school.
Because many TPEC students have parents who live far away, KRC created a Mentor Program for the school's oldest students. The goal is simple: connect students with caring adults who can walk alongside them as they prepare for the transition beyond TPEC. Our first round received wonderful feedback from both students and mentors, affirming how meaningful these relationships can be.
On August 9, we celebrated the completion of the first Mentor Program with a graduation celebration and all-you-can-eat pizza! It was a simple, joyful way to celebrate the students and the relationships that have formed around them.
Through these efforts, KRC is helping TPEC become more than a place where children attend school. We want it to be a place where children are safe, known, encouraged, and given opportunities to imagine a different future.
